Bubble London caught up with Karel Wheen, co-founder of S/S17 Bubble brand Platypus Australia.
B & S meets … Platypus Australia
With the British summer holidays just around the corner, we’ve been chatting to Karel Wheen, co-founder of S/S17 Bubble brand Platypus Australia…
Hi Karel! Platypus was launched ten years ago – could you tell us a bit more about how this came about?
The idea for Platypus Australia was conceived when my children were young. My friend and I both had first-hand experience of applying sunscreen lotion to kids on-the-move and thought there must be an easier way of doing this. We noticed a gap in the market for children’s swimming suits and rash guard clothing which would protect little bodies from the sun’s damaging rays, while allowing them to remain comfortable and cool.
What makes Platypus’ swimwear UV protective?
Platypus Australia’s mission is to provide maximum UV protection while out in the sun. Each piece has a UPF 50+ rating, blocking out at least 97.5% of harmful ultraviolet radiation and meeting the strict criteria of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the British Standard for Ultraviolet Radiation. The line is made with LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™, which affords supreme shape-retention, maximum breathability, and ultra chlorine resistance properties.
In terms of design, what inspires the brand’s collections?
Each season we introduce new exclusive prints and designs, which enhance our capsule collection. Living in Australia, we are inspired by outdoor living, the vibrant colours of beach and sea life and of course children – playing, laughing and having fun together. We also watch the catwalk and pay attention to predicted trends and how they can work across our swimwear lines.
Could you tell us more about the S/S17 collection you showed at Bubble?
Our 2017 collection is by far our most diverse, and we loved sharing our new silhouettes inspired by the active wear trend, at Bubble. The new collection features performance items for swimming lessons and pool training like high neck athletic style bikinis, key hole one-pieces and the very popular printed jammers and athleisure leggings.
In addition, we showed our new on-trend swimwear styles including cropped rash guards, capped sleeve one pieces and flounce bikinis for girls and a t-shirt rash guard with a pocket for boys.
Fashion beachwear has really grabbed the attention of our customers and we are thrilled to extend our offer with new pompom sundresses, tiered dress silhouettes and gorgeous rompers, all in matching prints and embroidery maintaining the mix and match theme which is seen across all collections.
Why did you choose to show at Bubble this season?
We have been showing at Bubble London for a number of years. It is London’s biggest and best baby and kids tradeshow so it is very important we have a presence. It gives us a great opportunity to meet with our existing stockists but also to reach out to potential new ones and generally engage with the industry.
